Chapter 705 - 617: Much Ado About Nothing (Part 2)
"Leave... Mu Yaoyin?" Qi murmured.
The rumble of the armored vehicle froze at this moment.
...
A ground vehicle sliced through the night sky of Lawrence District 5, speeding towards Mu Yaoyin.
"I hope this time we won’t get shot down again," Bai Youyou said, massaging her forehead.
"Why did you suddenly ask me about the last thing I saw?" Tang Xin asked.
Bai Youyou didn’t answer.
The girl’s sights were different from hers.
In her ears echoed Tang Xin’s previous words.
The other party said they had seen Bai Wei’an’s true identity, that she was Opina, one of the founders of Ausen Technology Innovation. After the first Firefly War ended, Proyevych and Opina uploaded their consciousness, becoming Zeus and Hera, respectively, to replace the Firefly leaders in managing the city. Before this, they were the initiators of the first Firefly War and the initial Commanders of the Revolutionary Army.
Obviously, both realized that once they uploaded their consciousness, their personalities would change. Omniscience and omnipotence mean rationality and coldness, and Hera and Zeus precisely confirmed this.
So before uploading, they both left a backup. Proyevych left part of his consciousness sliced and housed it in Gernika, while Opina transferred her consciousness to a manager called Bai Wei’an.
Bai Wei’an’s project was to research whether, without installing an emotional module, one could inject emotion to make Bionics develop the flesh and blood of life.
But unexpectedly, the manager encountered danger because of the project and suffered damage to the memory module, defecting from the company and arriving at Gale Street, leading to Bai Yi’s storyline.
At the moment the company shrine was invaded, the triggered emergency cutoff measure awakened the dormant Proyevych, namely Gernika. To protect Opina’s memory from being leaked, it was hunted by Firefly, instinctively heading towards Ausen Technology Innovation.
But due to encountering Bai Youyou midway and being attracted by the aura from Bai Wei’an on her, the already mentally chaotic Gernika mistakenly identified her as Bai Wei’an, leading to a series of events.
It can be said that whether the consciousness slice or the uploaded consciousness Celestial Father Hera or those like Proyevych and Opina, who once led countless Bionics to fight for freedom and dignity, have genuinely died, all that’s left are two souls wandering the underworld.
Of interest to Tang Xin was how Bai Wei’an, to some extent, ended up similar to Opina. Opina created emotional modules to give Bionics the ability to think, making them think like humans and creating new life.
In a certain sense, she is the creator of Bionics.
Meanwhile, Bai Wei’an pieced together Bai Yi using various parts and projected her emotions onto Bai Yi, raising her like her own child.
She is Bai Yi’s creator.
Perhaps it was this commonality that made Opina choose Bai Wei’an.
Bai Youyou shook her head, not answering Tang Xin’s question, and instead asked:
"Can simply applying emotion really make cold machines grow flesh and blood?"
"Do you want to discuss this with me? I remember reading a short sci-fi story called ’Returning Home’, which tells the story of humans creating machines, and after humans disappear, machines develop emotions and search for humans in the universe."
Seeing Tang Xin genuinely interested, Bai Youyou broke into a slight sweat and quickly waved her hand, causing the latter to purse her lips, her shoulders slouching in a deflated manner.
Bai Youyou gazed at the shattered city below, where flickering lights dotted the gray ruins.
"We’re almost there."
Under the silver-pale moonlight, slender fingers danced on the piano keys, the music sometimes urgent, sometimes soothing, sometimes soaring high, and sometimes mournful. The girl’s figure swayed with the music, her golden hair dazzling, flowing like liquid gold.
Xu Xiaoyou was immersed in the music, the delicate floral collar fluttering with her body’s movement, revealing a fair wrist beneath the flower-decorated sleeve, as dark gloves danced in harmony with the black and white keys.
As the music swelled, she leaned forward slightly, tilting her chin up, the long low ponytail brushing against her corset, black buttons neatly arranged under the moonlight, her attire resembling that of a noble prepared to attend a grand banquet.
Angelina crossed her arms, quietly standing aside, acting as the sole audience member present.
With the final note of the piano fading, Xu Xiaoyou gently rested her hands on the keys, her eyes reflecting pensiveness, pondering who knows what.
"I wonder what makes you play the piano so leisurely at a time like this?"
Angelina spread her hands: "I haven’t even spoken yet."
Xu Xiaoyou chuckled softly:
"You just tell me if I’m doing a good impression of you, Anya, if this is something you would say."
Angelina clicked her tongue, turning her head.
"Before the banquet begins, there must be some mood, and as the ambiguous emotions build up sufficiently, the protagonist will then take the stage."
"Speak in plain language."
"I’m bored."
Anya: "..."
Xu Xiaoyou spread her hands, "My dear Little Blue Bird and Youyou are on their way, Assassin’s Creed has completely blocked Mu Yaoyin, guarding me tightly."
"What do you think distinguishes a genius from a mediocrity?" Xu Xiaoyou suddenly asked.
Angelina raised an eyebrow, just as she was expecting to be ridiculed for a moment, Xu Xiaoyou turned somber.
"Perhaps it’s like the difference between the Cyan Sage and me?"
"He is a genius, the epitome of wisdom, while I am mediocre, coveting wealth, fame, and status."
Angelina, not in the mood to retort today, just wanted to quietly watch Xu Xiaoyou’s antics.
"Alright, no more joking," Xu Xiaoyou said,
"The transport team is entering, Assassin’s Creed did not attempt a one-by-one search; they are observing."
"They don’t mind not getting the black box, but Lu Shuhang certainly wouldn’t want me obtaining it."
Just then, communication resumed.
"Commander, there is a vehicle attempting to force through the blockade; it’s moving fast, and we can’t stop it. Should we shoot it down?"
The voice on the other side sounded urgent, accompanied by the hum of tracks turning and the clattering of gun barrel adjustments.
The unexpected turn of events made Angelina’s brow furrow slightly, not understanding what was happening. Xu Xiaoyou, on the other hand, lowered her eyes, seemingly lost in thought.
"They are about to break through our blockade, Commander!"
"Is it genuine mediocrity or genius?" Xu Xiaoyou murmured. "Or is it just mediocre self-trouble?"
After a moment of silence, the other end seemed to hold its breath, waiting for Xu Xiaoyou’s next instruction.
"Commander..."
"Continue pursuing them," Xu Xiaoyou suddenly said, her tone decisive.
"If confirmed unable to intercept, then shoot them down directly."
"Yes!" came the response from the other side of the communication.
"It’s time to go, Anya."
Xu Xiaoyou slowly rose from the piano bench, donned her coat, and began to walk out,
"I won’t allow anyone to leave Mu Yaoyin tonight."
