Chapter 530 - 522: Jealousy
Chapter 530 - 522: Jealousy
Xu Kuan was not afraid of Gu Yifeng, only looking at him with a faint expression and a face full of disdain, which further angered Gu Yifeng.
"Why are you so free today? Every time I invite you to our home since you returned, you always say you’re too busy."
Xu Kuan chuckled, "You said it wrong. Every time I said I’d come, you told me to go to the Marquis Mansion. I wanted to see Sister Ning, but never had the chance. Today I happened to have some matters, so I came over to talk with Sister Ning. I didn’t expect you to return so quickly. Is there something urgent, or did you hear I was here and rushed back? We’ve known each other for years, and I never took you to be so petty."
Xu Kuan expressed himself so directly, without the slightest hint of fear, smiling even in the face of Gu Yifeng’s icy gaze. Gu Yifeng immediately adjusted his strategy, "You’ve always been a steady person. Since when did you start acting so frivolous? You’re supposed to be setting an example for your grandchildren. You should behave more like a senior and refrain from wandering around other people’s backyards. It wouldn’t look good for your reputation."
"I haven’t been to other people’s homes, nor do I want to. It’s only because Sister Ning is here that I come by. You know very well that I’m fond of Sister Ning." Xu Kuan looked directly at Gu Yifeng, seemingly provoking him.
Gu Yifeng sat on the couch, pulled Sister Ning into his arms, and placed his hand on her belly before speaking, "It’s a pity for your feelings, but Sister Ning has her heart set on me. We’ve known each other for many years, so I’m telling you this directly out of respect. There’s no need to dwell on it; find someone else. A friend’s wife is off-limits."
Lin Youning felt uncomfortable. She and Xu Kuan never had anything between them, yet with her elder brother speaking like this, it seemed as if she were fickle. She wanted to get off, but Gu Yifeng wouldn’t let go. Pregnant as she was, she couldn’t possibly struggle free and was eventually held tightly in his arms.
Xu Kuan noticed and frowned slightly, "If you have something to say to me, say it. Let Sister Ning go and let her leave."
"That’s unnecessary." Gu Yifeng grew angry upon hearing this, holding on to Sister Ning a bit tighter, which made her frown slightly. Noticing this, Gu Yifeng relaxed his grip.
Lin Youning’s expression softened a bit. Knowing her elder brother was jealous, she no longer insisted on leaving. Seeing all this, Xu Kuan felt heartache, as he had affections for Sister Ning but she only cared for Gu Yifeng, willing to endure any hardship for him. That was the difference between them.
Xu Kuan had come today hoping to see Sister Ning. Having seen her and said what he needed to say, he didn’t stay any longer. After exchanging a few more words, he stood up to leave, mentioning only things about Wu Xueya, saying that Xu Mansion had already sent her back to Wu Mansion.
After Xu Kuan left, Gu Yifeng returned to a silent house. He was puzzled until he saw Lin Youning lying in bed, guessing that she was angry. He walked over, took off his boots, and climbed into bed, wrapping an arm around her from behind.
"I knew he would take advantage of my absence to see you. I didn’t overthink it, but I didn’t like him doing this." Gu Yifeng said this somewhat sheepishly, "If you’re upset, say it to me. It’s not good for you to bottle it up. If you’re worried he’ll laugh, I’ll invite him over for a meal next time as an opportunity to talk. How about that?"
By this point, Gu Yifeng had begun to soften his stance.
He knew he had overreacted today. Seeing Lin Youning with Xu Kuan, even though Xu Kuan was his good friend, he couldn’t help feeling jealous.
Given Lin Youning’s pride, he suspected that she felt uncomfortable due to his obvious behavior.
Lin Youning turned around, "I understand that it upset you, but Xu Kuan and I had nothing. You made it look otherwise and wouldn’t let me leave. Did you consider my feelings?"
"It was my fault. I promise I won’t do this again, alright?" Gu Yifeng whispered, drawing close like a wronged child, "When I came back, you two were looking at each other."
Such a jealous man.
Yet Lin Youning couldn’t stay angry. Instead, she felt it was sweet. "He surprised me with those words at that moment, so I was stunned, not exchanging looks with him. Besides, I have you, elder brother, how could I have anything with him?"
Gu Yifeng laughed at her words, "Then I won’t overthink it in the future."
Lin Youning didn’t quite believe him. She knew as long as Xu Kuan visited, her elder brother would be upset. She didn’t want discord between them due to an outsider, so she didn’t dwell on the issue further.
Meanwhile, rumors in the Capital swirled increasingly. The Crown Prince’s grand wedding was approaching, and on the day Prince Shou visited the Crown Prince Mansion, he overheard people gossiping about it.
Prince Shou was very protective; even if his daughter made a mistake, he would take her side, let alone when she hadn’t done anything wrong.
He inquired about it, headed straight for Mr. Wu, and beat him behind a rockery, though Mr. Wu dared not complain, harboring unspeakable grievances.
Among his two daughters and a son, not one proved worthy. One concubine’s daughter disowned him as a father, one daughter was divorced and sent home, and the son offended the Royal Family by marrying a certain woman.
Looking at these things, any one of them wasn’t a small issue.
Mr. Wu dared not let anyone see, using his sleeve to cover his face as he returned home, only to hear his elder daughter quarreling when he arrived. Seeing it was his daughter-in-law, though Mr. Wu was angry, he dared not speak. Another daughter from the Feng Family had been sent to the Crown Prince Mansion, sent there that very day. Who knew if they might rise to success in the future? With the Wu Mansion in its current state, they could only rely on this daughter-in-law.
With those thoughts, Mr. Wu instructed the servant beside him, then went to the study.
The servant carried out the orders, approached the two quarreling women, offered a respectful greeting, then said, "Young Madam, the master requests your presence in the study."
Wu Xueya turned to glance at the servant, seeing it was someone from her father’s side, she said nothing. Feng Yufu, however, sneered, "Divorced and coming back, causing trouble for yourself. Deal with your own affairs, they’re none of my business. Think about what you’re going to do. I’m afraid you won’t last in this household much longer."
